JOSEPH LALLO (VIC)

Melbourne Saxophone Artistic Director

Joseph Lallo is a Lecturer of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne, and performs internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. He is the Artistic Director for Melbourne Saxophone and the Melbourne International Saxophone Festival, and was the artistic and programming assistant for the 2015 World Saxophone Congress and Festival in Strasbourg, France.

Joseph has performed with the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and The Australian Ballet, and as a soloist with China’s Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Melbourne's Pro Musica Orchestra performing Chu Wanghua's Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, Joseph is a member of the esteemed chamber music ensemble Collide with cellist Yelian He and pianist Yasmin Rowe, as well as Duo Obax with oboist Briana Leaman.

Joseph has performed and given master classes in Paris at the Cité Internationale des Arts and the Théâtre du Châtelet, Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Saxophone Symposium and the Lasalle Contemporary School of the Arts, Tennessee’s Vanderbilt University, The University of South Carolina, the Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy in Thailand, Beijing’s National Library Concert Hall, The New Zealand Saxophone Academy, The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music and The Monash Sir Zelman School of Music, The Australian Saxophone Retreat, and The Strasbourg Conservatorium of Music.

Joseph is a Selmer Saxophones Artist and a D'Addario Woodwind Artist, and performs on Series III Alto & Soprano Saxophones, Selmer Concept mouthpieces, and D'Addario Reserve Reeds.

TONG YANG (CN)

Saxophone Professor Of Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing.

Beijing born in 15th December 1982, Tong Yang, is currently leaving his musical "footprint" throughout Europe, USA as well as Asia with appearances at London Trinity Laban Conservatoire UK, Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (GuestProfessor) Germany, Mary Peppert School of Music at Duquesne Univeristy USA, Conservatori Superior de Musica de ILLES BALEARS Spain. Forbidden City Hall Beijing, Shenzhen Concert Hall. TianJin Grand Theater. Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong City Hall, Taipei National University of Arts, Thailand Siapakorn University, Malaysia University and Manilla College of Music. He is considered to be one of the foremost saxophone pedagogues in China.

In addition to his love of the Concert Saxophone repertoire, he is also keen to develop and proliferate saxophone contemporary music through contact with many of today's composers. These composers include Mauricio Kagel, Hans-Joachim Hespos, Ida Kotkovsky, Betsy Jolas, Francois Rossé, Qi Gang Chen, Robert Lemay, Chao Ming Tung, Etienne Rollin and Christian Lauba. From 2001-2008, he studied at Russian Genesins Academy of Music with Professor Yury Valonsov. During his time at the Academy, he received 1st Prize of D.E.M. Saxophone from Conservatoire de National de Bordeaux in the class of Marie Bernadette Charrier, and was awarded a Master of Arts Diploma de Concert from Conservatoire de Lausanne Switzerland under the guidance of Pierre- Stéphane Meugé. In 2012 he is invited to be an jury for 2012 Hong Kong Youth Symphonic band Competition as well as 2014 Macau Youth Musicians Competition by Culture Department of Hong Kong and Macau Government.

He has presented several world premiere works in the 14th, 15th、17th and 18th World Saxophone Congress in Ljubljana, Bangkok, Strasbourg and Zagreb. He is currently tenured Professor of Saxophone at Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing, Vice chairman of Hong Kong International Single Reed Association 2016 and the Music Instructor of BOB (Best of Best) Awarders of Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing.

CLIFFORD LEAMAN (USA)

Associate Dean, Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Professor of Saxophone at the University of South Carolina, Clifford Leaman has performed and taught throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia at major schools of music and conservatories, including Northwestern, Eastman, Michigan, North Texas, Florida State, National Supérieur de Paris, Boulogne-Billancourt, Strasbourg, Aragón, Catalunya, Royal Academy of Music (Stockholm), Beijing Central, Shanghai, and Sichuan Conservatories. Leaman has recorded four compact discs with piano on the Equilibrium label, and two additional discs with percussionist Scott Herring as the RoseWind Duo.

In addition to his work with piano and marimba, Leaman has performed as a concerto soloist with numerous Wind Ensembles and Orchestras and has recorded concerti by Henry Brant, Leslie Bassett, and Ingolf Dahl. An avid supporter of contemporary music, Leaman has commissioned and given the world premiere performances of over 30 works, including concerti by William Bolcom, Leslie Bassett, Frank Ticheli, and Michael Colgrass. Leaman is an artist-clinician for D’Addario and the Conn-Selmer Company, Inc. and performs exclusively on Selmer saxophones and D’Addario Reserve reeds.

MICHELLINA CHAN (SG)

Michellina Chan (b. 1992) is a Singaporean saxophonist. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, a Master of Music studying with Arno Bornkamp at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Amsterdam University of the Arts and the Diplôme d’Etudes Musicales at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux Jacques Thibaud, Bordeaux, France under the tutelage of Marie-Bernadette Charrier.

Having the opportunity to live in diverse vibrant cities, Michellina loves collaborating not only with fellow musicians but also with inter-disciplinary artists. Venturing into ballet at a young age, Michellina continues this passion with Duo plastiCITY together with dancer, Valerie Lim, to create multi-disciplinary performances that challenges not only gravity but the perception of audiences towards classical contemporary music.

She also founded some of Singapore’s top professional chamber groups, Xin Saxophone Quartet as well as the up and coming K口U Musik, a mixed ensemble with brasses and woodwinds.

As an educator in Singapore, she often gives workshops at festivals by the Wind Bands Association of Singapore and also teaches regularly at the Singapore Armed Forces Band, National University of Singapore Symphonic Band, Dunman High Secondary School amongst others. .

SARA ANN BEALE (VIC)

Sara began her saxophone studies at the age of thirteen. Coming from a predominantly sporting family in Gippsland, Sara was fortunate to have her curiosity for music nurtured. Sara attended The University of Melbourne completing a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Teaching. During this time, Sara studied with Ian Godfrey and decided to major on baritone saxophone. During her undergraduate degree, Sara was the recipient of the “Lois Singer” Foundation Award for the most meritorious music student completing the Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of teaching degree. Sara decided to return to University to complete a Master’s of Music majoring in Performance, she was the first female to attain a Master of Music Performance on the saxophone in Victoria. Sara has been a member of “SAXE” saxophone quartet, who performed at the World Saxophone Congress in the U.S.A in 2004. Sara has more recently performed with the Hador Saxophone Quartet, The Melbourne Saxophone Ensemble and Orchestra Victoria. Sara is particularly passionate about delivering quality music education to children from the country. She has worked in the South Gippsland Schools’ Music Program for the past ten years, teaching clarinet, saxophone and classroom music, as well as leading the Senior Wind Ensemble. In her spare time, Sara is the conductor of the local Wonthaggi Youth Brass and loves to play golf and tennis.

MICHAEL LICHNOVSKY (VIC)

Since gaining the DMA degree studying with professor Kennth Tse (University of Iowa), Dr. Michael Lichnovsky has focused on saxophone pedagogy - he has taught at the University of Melbourne and Monash University, and is currently Head of Woodwind at Girton Grammar School, Bendigo. His students have had success at solo and concerto competitions, AMEB and VCE examinations, with many continuing on to tertiary study both in Australia and abroad.

As a performer, Michael has performed with Orchestra Victoria, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as a concerto soloist with the Monash University Wind Symphony, and on Radio National and ABC Classic FM as a chamber musician. His recent involvement in new music has seen him as a member of the Argonaut Ensemble, the resident ensemble of the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music.

Upcoming events include educational and recording projects with saxophone quartet and composer collaborations with David Chisholm and Marco Cher-Gibard.
